Frequently Asked Questions
Find quick answers to common questions about shopping at The Book Stop in Brigg, from ordering and reservations to donations and events. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please do get in touch.
What are your opening hours?
We are open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Like many independent bookshops, there may occasionally be changes for events, markets or seasonal openings, so it is always worth checking social media for updates.
Can I request a book you do not currently stock?
Of course. You can order online, drop us an email at thebriggbookstop@gmail.com, or simple pop into the shop and let us know what you’re looking for.
Can local authors or community groups work with you?
Very much so. We would love to work with local schools, reading groups, artists, authors and community organisations. If you have an idea for an event, collaboration or project linked to books, stories or reading culture, we would genuinely love to hear from you.
What events do you have coming up?
We hope to host author events, reading groups, children’s activities, seasonal displays and community projects linked to books and reading. Details of upcoming events can be found on our Author Events and Community pages.
Why buy from an independent bookshop?
Because independent bookshops offer something algorithms cannot.
Conversation. Discovery. Recommendations. Unexpected finds. Community. Personality.
Bookshops help keep reading visible within towns and communities and create spaces where people can slow down and connect through stories and ideas.
Do you offer evening openings?
Yes. We can arrange special evening openings for reading groups, social gatherings and private browsing events.
Guests are welcomed with a complimentary prosecco or nosecco on arrival which makes for a rather lovely evening surrounded by books.
If this is something you might be interested in organising, please get in touch.
I cannot manage the stairs. Can I still access the upstairs stock?
Of course. We appreciate that not everybody can access the upstairs room and we are always happy to help. We keep a full stock list and can fetch books for you at any time. Please just ask. Accessibility and inclusivity genuinely matter to us.
Do you welcome suggestions?
Absolutely. In fact, we actively want them.
If there are books you would like us to stock, genres you would like to see more of, events you would enjoy or community projects you think we should support, please tell us.
What do you value most as a bookshop?
Reading for pleasure, community and kindness.
We believe books should feel welcoming rather than intimidating and that all reading counts. We want people to feel comfortable coming in for a browse, a recommendation, a conversation or simply a bit of peace and quiet.
We also strongly believe in making time to read in an increasingly busy world.
Will you stock books recommended on BookTok?
Absolutely. BookTok has helped huge numbers of teenagers and young adults reconnect with reading and we think that is something to celebrate. If people are excited enough about a book to queue for it, cry over it or message their friends about it at midnight, then we are interested too.
We are always keen to hear what younger readers are enjoying and what books they would like to see on the shelves.
Can I just come in for a browse?
Please do. Some people arrive knowing exactly what they want. Others simply want to wander around shelves for half an hour and see what they discover. We are very happy with both approaches. Independent bookshops are one of the few places where browsing is still positively encouraged.
Are you a café?
Not yet. However, we do serve Sally’s Coffee and Crunch and it is proving surprisingly popular. In fact, during the decorating stage of the shop, it was more or less used as currency to bribe decorators and helpers into continuing to work.
Do you offer tutoring or educational consultancy?
Alongside bookselling, I also have experience in education, libraries and literacy development and am available for selected educational consultancy work. I do not currently offer tutoring through The Book Stop at the moment, but am happy to point you towards useful resources, reading recommendations or local support.
Please do get in touch if you want to know more.
Are dogs welcome?
Well behaved dogs are very welcome at The Book Stop and if they are thirsty, just let us know and we will happily find them a bowl of water.
Do you sell online?
Yes. We know not everybody can always get into Brigg, so we aim to make ordering as easy as possible. You can order online, by phone or by contacting us directly. Of course, we are always happiest when people pop in for a browse and a chat too.
Why are you called The Book Stop?
Naming the shop took far longer than expected. There were many possibilities along the way including Nanna Brigg, a nod to my own nanna who lived in Brigg and loved reading, and even Freaders inspired by my mum Freda Flint, another lifelong reader. In the end though, The Book Stop simply felt right. It says what it is on the tin really. A place to stop, browse, chat and enjoy books for a while.
Do you sell gift cards?
Yes, you can buy a gift card in-person, or from our online shop. Bookshop gift cards make wonderful presents, particularly for teenagers and young adults who often enjoy choosing their own books.
What kinds of books do you specialise in?
We are passionate about reading for pleasure, so we stock all sorts – contemporary fiction, children’s books, thoughtful nonfiction, literary fiction, local interest titles, bestsellers, and any books that spark conversation. We like to think a good bookshop should contain a few surprises inside!
Will you host book clubs or reading groups?
Yes, absolutely. We would love The Book Stop to become a place where readers can meet, talk about books and share recommendations. We are particularly interested in intergenerational reading groups and informal, welcoming spaces for discussion.
If you already run a group and would like to collaborate with us, please get in touch.
Do you accept second hand book donations?
Yes, we do love them. At the same time, we are also very conscious that local charity shops rely heavily on donated books, so we would never want to take away from that. If you have books to share, perhaps spread the love around a little.
Do you stock second hand or bargain books?
Yes. We love second hand books and bargain finds. Our upstairs room contains a mixture of pre loved titles, vintage books and discounted stock.
Do you run competitions or giveaways?
Yes, quite often. We regularly run competitions, book giveaways and community activities both in the shop and online. Sometimes these involve advance copies from publishers, themed displays, seasonal events or simply passing on books we think deserve more readers.
Keep an eye on our website and social media pages for updates.
Can I sit and read for a while?
Of course. We may not be the largest bookshop in the world, but we very much want people to feel able to slow down, browse and spend time here. If you leave with a pile of books that is lovely. If you leave simply feeling calmer than when you came in, that matters too.
What do you hope The Book Stop becomes?
We hope it becomes one of those places people feel genuinely fond of. Somewhere welcoming, thoughtful and quietly full of stories, conversation and discovery. A proper independent bookshop where people feel comfortable coming in for recommendations, a browse, a coffee or simply a bit of peace and quiet.
Can you advise me about my child’s reading or education?
I am always happy to have an informal chat. Before opening The Book Stop, I spent many years working in education and libraries and I still care deeply about schools, reading and young people. Sometimes parents simply want reassurance, book recommendations or ideas for encouraging reading at home and I am very happy to help where I can. That said, I also have huge respect for teachers and schools and would never claim to replace the professionals working with children every day in classrooms.
Can young people study or read quietly upstairs?
We are very lucky to have the library just down the road and would always encourage people to make use of such a brilliant community resource. That said, we also know that not everybody has a quiet space to read or study. If a young person genuinely needs somewhere calm to sit with a book for a while, have a chat with us and we will always try to help where we reasonably can.
At heart, we want The Book Stop to feel welcoming and supportive, particularly for young readers and students.
